Pool Fences

Pool fences prevent children from drowning. Make sure you have pool fences at home if there are children present.

Pool Fences

Many cities in the US require that pools at homes where children under the age 6 years old reside must be completely surrounded by permanent pool fences. They also encourage any home where children frequently visit to have pool fences. Before you do install the fence you should check the specific regulations on pool fences in the city or town that you live in. This way you will know exactly what to buy and how best to install them, saving you time and frustration later on down the line. Most cities will even specify the spacing of chain links or slats.

Check existing fences

All pool fences should be impossible for children 6 and under to be able to climb. They should also have self-closing and self-latching gates that only allow adults to come and go with ease. And the latches should be at least 4-5 feet above the ground so that none of the children that are present will be able to open the gates without an adult. Any gap in the fence should be no more than 4 inches wide. Be certain that any existing fence is in very good shape and stable. If you find that your pool fences are a bit wobbly or uncertain than make sure that a professional tends to the fence to bring it back up to par.

Once the fences are installed properly does not mean that now you can forget about them. It is imperative that they be checked regularly and maintained for optimum safety. Keep the hinges and latches well-oiled and free of any faults as your fence is worthless without properly functioning latches. Don't get lazy an somehow prop the gates open. They should be securely closed at all times whether or not the child is outside. Accidents can occur very quickly and a child can move from one spot to the next with sometimes amazing speed. Never get too comfortable thinking that it cannot happen to you and your family, instead make sure that it does not!
