Fire Alarm
Did you know that if you have a burglar alarm system, you can add a fire alarm system for a relatively small charge? You can, and it's worth it. Especially if your home is in an area that's prone to occasional wildfires.
Be Alarmed
Of course, you don't have to live in an area that's prone to wildfires to need a fire alarm. Fire can strike homes for a variety of reasons in any part of the world. Hopefully it will never happen to you, but if it does, wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? Plus, you can put them in any room of the house you want.
A residential fire alarm that's part of a home security system is better than a smoke alarm because it senses heat and it has bells and whistles (no, seriously--it has bells or horns that sound when a fire is detected). Another advantage of having this type of fire alarm is that since it's monitored, you can alert the monitoring service of rooms where there may be someone who's disabled, an elderly person or a child. That way, when the fire department arrives, they'll have that information. This is especially important if that person is home alone when a fire breaks out. If nobody is there to help them escape, at least a fire alarm system can help the firefighters get to them sooner, possibly saving their life.
Because of the cost of a burglar system, most people don't have them and just stick with a smoke detector in each room. That's fine, just make sure you have a foolproof escape plan that everyone in the house knows. And don't have just one plan. You never know where a fire will break out, so your plan is to have everyone meet at the front door, but the door is blocked by fire, you will need a plan B.
