Protect Yourself From Flooding And The Inherent Damage It'll Do
Did 2005 not teach you anything about flooding?
Seriously, do you not own a TV? Have you picked up the paper in your lifetime? If the events of last fall have not taught you all that you need to know (and a heck of a lot more) about flooding, well, you have some serious problems. Particularly if you live in a flood zone! Look, a severe storm can cause a lot of damage. The winds can blow debris all over creation. We are talking about cars and trucks getting flipped over and trees falling on your house. Serious stuff. But that might be the least of your worries if you live in a low lying area. Your greatest concern -- or at least one of them -- should be flooding. Because if Hurricane Katrina is any indication, the damage could take years to repair, if it's reparable at all. What can you do to protect yourself against flooding?
- Get insurance. It sounds crazy, but you can't stop Mother Nature, you can only hope to contain it. Financially, that is. With the help of the right insurance policy, which will be mandatory if you live in a FEMA designated zone, flooding can be contained financially at the very least. You have to do what you can to rebuild, even though you can't stop the storm.
- Get the heck out. You have to know the evacuation route best for you and your family and be sure that you are keeping an eye on the weather. If you end up stuck in a flood, with roads impassable and your home taking on water, you could be in a real quagmire. One that could be avoided almost all the time. Property is replaceable. Lives are not.
That's just the early breakdown on flooding. For more on flooding and how to prevent the worst possible damage, continue to explore our site and its recommended resources. Do what you can to keep your family and property safe.
