College Safety

College safety usually escapes the vernacular of most teenagers who are preparing to leave the nest. The safe haven known as college can be a wonderful time in our lives, but, a little college safety goes a long way in making for the best experiences.

College Safety

Mention college safety to an overzealous college bound teenager and you will probably get nothing more than a roll of the eyes or an exaggerated grumble. Their perception of the college experience and the one that we have as adults can sometimes be world's apart. And, while we should never diminish the appeal of college life, it is important to at least broach the subject of college safety.

Common sense is a good place to start as many college aged children haven't fully examined how life away from the safety zone of home can be very different. For example, take dating. As hormones rage in college aged children, rational choices tend to go out the window. Of course we all try to send our children out into the world with a base of knowledge regarding certain subjects, but dating becomes a very different subject when you throw alcohol and relaxed curfews into the mix.

A college campus can be a very lonely place for someone who, more than anything, is looking for acceptance. At the tender age of most college freshman, it is ever important to make the right social connections in an attempt to raise their level of "coolness." This can make them more vulnerable to the pitfalls of peer pressure. And, peer pressure comes in the need to conform to established norms which are, more often than not, unhealthy.

That's where it is important to make your child aware of college safety issues concerning alcohol consumption and dating. Not only are there the perils of date rate, alcohol poisoning and alcohol related traffic accidents, but, the inclusion of alcohol into their daily lives has a domino effect on grades and health issues.

Don't forget to mention college safety to your college bound loved ones as you pack them off to their big debut as adults. Just as they will need notebooks, pens and a lot of tender loving care, a lesson on college safety is a critical measure to ensure success.
